Open your door in 2019 sign up for Hot Spot; this is a social gathering serving a hot beverage and maybe cookies to your neighbors and sharing your thoughts on the legacy of King.
Contact MLK Committee Chair Zola Brown if you have any questions 585-210-9370 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The 14th Annual Luminary Evening begins at 6:00 pm on Monday, January 21 when residents of the 19th Ward will begin setting out luminaries on the sidewalks in front of their homes to celebrate community, friendship and the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream.
Celebrating Kings Day serves as an opportunity to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to social activism and the legacy that has inspired us to continue his movement.
See how to make your own Luminaries in a YouTube video by a 19th Ward resident, Moiet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aakcPdUykp4&feature=youtu.be
We are looking for more homes willing to be Hot Spots. This simply means that you provide hot chocolate and/or hot cider and/or a bonfire, anything warm, and of course a friendly smile on a cold winter night. Send questions or a commitment to email@example.com.
A limited number of Luminary kits will be available from the 19th Ward Community Association Office at 216 Thurston Road. Call the office to make arrangements to pick one up.

Luminary Evening is a tradition started in the 19th Ward during the Winter of 2006. Some neighbors got the idea that it would be great to have an occasion in the middle of Winter for neighbors to get out and enjoy the Community Spirit and Friendship that exists during the Summer when lots of neighbors are out and about. Martin Luther King Day was chosen since it occurs at the right time and one of his life goals was connecting all peoples in the US in community spirit, friendship, and mutual respect.
The first Winter, many homes in the neighborhood lined their front yard with Luminaries purchased at Hunts Hardware on Thurston Road or from the 19th Ward Community Association. Hunts Hardware and Menezes Pizza sells the Luminary Kit packages and 25% of all proceeds go to the 19th Ward Community Association. A much larger segment of the 19th Ward participated in 2007 and several neighbors setup hot dog and hot chocolate stands to feed and warm the neighbors strolling the beautiful streets. Each of the following years has seen participation continue to grow.
This year, we are using Luminary Evening to connect all segments of the Southwest Quadrant. Residents of the neighborhood and visitors from all around Rochester are invited to stroll the streets, enjoy the warm glow, meet neighbors and enjoy the hot chocolate and treats that will be set up on many streets.
